Introduction

Beyond their profound cultural and historical legacy, spices, herbs, and aromatics are high-value agricultural commodities that play a pivotal role in the global economy. Due to its strategic tropical geography and immense biodiversity, Indonesia has historically served as a global hub for the spice, herb, and aromatic industries, occupying a vital vantage point in the worldwide value chain. To modernize and reclaim this heritage, the Indonesian government inaugurated the “Indonesia Spice Up the World (ISUTW)” program in 2021.

However, the sector currently stands at critical crossroads. Despite national momentum, the industry faces the dual pressure of meeting rising global demand while addressing urgent hurdles such as climate change, land degradation, and the need for fair labour practices. Furthermore, sustainability in the spice sector has historically been measured against disparate benchmarks, such as forestry or unrelated agricultural goods. A more effective approach requires a customized, multi-dimensional framework that bridges the gap between scientific theory and commercial reality. By integrating ecological integrity with business viability, the industry can offer actionable strategies for everyone from smallholder farmers to global exporters.

In response to these complex challenges, ranging from raw material sustainability to the integration of technology for value-added products, IPB University, through the Tropical Biopharmaca Research Center (TROP-BRC), is initiating the International Conference on Spice, Herbs and Aromatic 2026 (ICSHA–2026). This conference is designed as a collaborative nexus where academics, researchers, and industry leaders can unite to translate scientific innovation into global market strength and sustainable development.
